AGENDA
  • Welcome & introductions
  • Seminar by Dr. Silva
  • Q&A

UH-CTAHR welcomes you to a seminar presentation provided by Dr. Fábio Moreira da Silva of Brazil. He will share information about the current status, future trends and related issues of mechanized and semi-mechanized coffee harvesting in Brazil. Dr. Silva will also present on the status of coffee leaf rust and current technologies and varieties grown for resistance and control. While coffee leaf rust is not yet found in Hawaii, it is important for growers to know about the pathogen and how other farmers are continuing to farm coffee in its presence.

Dr. Silva is a professor at the Federal University of Lavras (https://ufla.br/) in Brazil, working in the area of Machinery and Agricultural Mechanization, specifically for mechanized coffee harvesting. He also coordinates and organizes the Coffee Crop Mechanization Symposium, an event linked to EXPOCAFÉ, possibly the largest coffee exhibition fair in Latin America (http://www.epamig.br/event/expocafe-2019/).

In the last years, he has been working directly with research in coffee cultivation mechanization, including participation in the development of several specific machines for harvesting, ground coffee collection, planting and cultivation operations. He has several publications in the area, including the book: Precision Coffee Cultivation (http://www.livraria.editora.ufla.br/cafeicultura-de-precis-o.html).

This presentation will be recorded via Zoom and made available to those unable to attend in person, as well as for growers on Maui, Oahu, Molokai and Kauai. If participating via Zoom for the first time, please download Zoom at least one day prior to the seminar to test your mic and speakers.
