UH-CTAHR's Cooperative Extension and the Hawaii Coffee Association welcome you to participate in a "Coffee Quality Workshop.
Hawaii coffee growers will have a unique opportunity this 2018-2019 crop year to potentially make exceptional profits and enhance their brand. The Hawaii Coffee Association is planning an online green coffee auction for all Hawaii coffees. The auction will be for all Hawaiian coffees from the 2018-2019 crop year and will be held at the end of March 2019.
Roasters and distributors have been willing to pay premium prices for high scoring coffee in online auctions. In the recent Honduran auction, top scoring green coffee lots sold for over $120/lb. The top coffee in the Panama auction sold for over $600/lb. and the top coffee in a Guatemalan auction sold for over $500/lb. Growers have discovered that placing well in auctions allows them to increase prices of all their coffees. The key to success for farmers in online green auctions is creating auction lots of high scoring coffee.
This workshop will provide detailed information on how quality coffee producers create high scoring coffee. Specific techniques will be tied to cupping point increases so that farmers can choose the techniques they wish to use.
Participants will learn strategies on how to prepare for coffee cupping competitions and auctions, including steps from farm level through to storage that will help make them a competitive entrant. There will also be discussions of how points are gained and lost in cupping coffee. The workshop will cover growing, picking, processing and storing high-point coffee. In addition, workshop participants will learn how to successfully execute a variety of processing methods: Washed, Natural, Honey, and the risks and potential rewards with each.
Participants are encouraged to bring parchment or green coffee samples for discussion.
Presenter, Miguel Meza, is uniquely qualified to lead this workshop. He has consulted with a number of Hawaiian farms and helped them produce high scoring coffees. Hawaiian farmers he has worked, with have taken 1st place in the HCA cupping competition 3 times. He is an international coffee consultant and trainer and has also been a judge in a number of international cupping competitions.
Registration is required for each participant. This class is limited to 40 participants.
